In 2006, childhood friends Michael Portman and Jayson Rapaport found themselves living in Austin, TX with nowhere to get an affordable, high-quality cut. Together, they created Bird’s Barbershop a salon for men and women, took out all the fuss, and added free Shiner to the experience. An addiction to old school arcade games developed. Today, Birds Barbershop employs more than 100 people across five Austin locations. In 2012 Michael and Jayson co-founded Verb, an affordable high-quality professional hair product line made to fit Birds’ affordable, high-quality cuts and color services.

I saw Kelly, on a recommendation. I went in ready for a big change, but unsure wha I waned. I talked to her about it and she described to me what she was thinking. It sounded good, so I agreed to it, and it was no disappointment! I love it! It’s short, and can be sassy and cute or nice and professional-looking, depending on how I style it, which is exactly what I wanted.

Birds is super hip and totally fun, too. They have a great, artsy decor, and there was a dj spinning down tempo tunes. They offer you refreshments while you get your cut, too. It was a fun experience.

There were only two drawbacks I found. The firs was that they only take walk-in or call-ahead by one hour appointments, so I ended up having to kill two hours while I waited. Luckily, I was on vacation and totally flexible, had a book with me and found a nearby bar to check out while I waited, but in normal day-to-day life I’d find not being able to make an appointment ahead of time very inconvenient. The other was that the price the website gave for my cut was not what I paid. I assume there was a charge for the wash and then the styling, maybe? But my hair was clean when I arrived and she didn’t ask, just said we’d wash my hair, and there was no talk of extra charges. The price was still not terrible, though I’d be sure to discuss price before starting anything next time.

All in all, if I lived in Austin, I’d definitely go back. Heck, if I need a haircut when I next visit, I’ll go back then.

I went into Birds having seen friends with cool haircuts saying they have been there and I was in the neighborhood and saw that they accepted walk-ins and were open til 9, and I just happened to be in the mood to get it cut so boom I was there.

Walk ins have plentiful and comfortable seating and have an actual magazine rack to wile away the very short time they will wait. My wait time was around (15-20 mins) and they have great free no password wi-fi if you just want to search videos about why certain bike locks are safer than others like i was doing.

Enter Justine. All I can say is she was awesome! She was really cool and listened to my ideas about what i was trying to get. My hair was semi-long and kind off crazy, but she was really positive and spent all the time she needed to get the cut just right. she cut it sharp but left just enough hair on top to cover that little bit of baldness way back there on the top back, She was really sweet and friendly, took her time to get it just right – even when the whole shop was shutting down – but not one person in the whole place threw attitude that Justine was taking extra time on this one customer. Everybody in the whole place seemed to understand that even the last moment haircut was just as important as any other.

and heres where i really started freaking out on how cool this place is… even when they are ready to get the hell out of work and live their own lives, they treat every last customer like they are valued and special.

Thank you Justine and thank you Byrds!

Who ever thought a one haircut a year guy just might start cleaning it up?

Fate smiled on me today. Leanne worked w my difficult tangly hair and cowlick to give me the perfect cut. I usually have a good experience at Bird’s. The best part is being spared from the fussy unnecessary hour plus salon experience and leaving w an equally nice cut.

I’m in between hair stylist because I move so much and I happened to be in Austin for the day with some extra time and an over due head of hair. I Found this place on Yelp and this year I have encouraged myself to take chances Ha! ( we all get nervous going to a new hair stylist, admit it!) Well I’m glad I had the free time and didn’t spend it in a bar ( although I could of had a beer while getting my hair cut and color.. Nice!). I met Cassie and she listened to my indecisiveness and concern and was very sweet and patient. I was nervous till the end and left Loving my Color and Cut. I would definitely make the trip back to see her again.. Thanks Cassie!

I can have a beer while I wait? Yes please! The perfect way to take the edge off the always slightly awkward experience of getting your hair cut.

I wish I could remember the name of the woman that cut my hair, she was from California if that helps narrow it down, haha. She was super chill and patient with me as I didn’t know what the hell I wanted. So she tried some things and did a great job, quality was in the top 10 hair cuts of my life I’d say.

Birds Barbershop makes my hair funkier and trendier. I would show the hairstylist a photo of the hairstyle I want. Majority of the time hairstylists would copy the same exact thing on the page. That’s fine by me but here, they know how to take it to the next level.

My recent hairstyle, I had so many compliments I told them where I had my haircut. I can never imagine going anywhere else and their prices are reasonable.

I guess they do take reservations but you need to call on the same day and a couple of hours or two in advance. Otherwise you will be waiting there for awhile. But then again you are on 6th Street where you can probably hit up a trailer and/or a dive bar.

I went from dark brown to dark teal.

The first time I’ve done anything remotely different with my hair so I was pretty nervous and excited. I pinned at least ten pictures of the exact color I wanted it after months of planning. My initial plan was to go to a salon that specialized in color, but after I went in with my boyfriend to get his hair cut, I saw Cassie, who had a very similar color to what I wanted. So I booked an appointment with her.
Long story short; my desired deep blue hair color was a bright green when I walked out. Cassie apologized and said she could fix it, but she’d have to charge me for the correction. Mmmm…okay. I paid the $180 (plus tip) and walked out.

I thought it was weird that I would have to pay AGAIN to get the color I originally wanted so I contacted Birds management and asked them if they could do anything.

They contacted me back quickly, asking where and when I would like to get my color fixed. Not only did they correct the color free of charge but Ace (the lady they chose to fix it) is by far best stylist I’ve gone to in Austin. She was friendly, creative, talented and hard working. Thank you, Birds and thank you Ace!
