“Hip” casual and affordable, The Backspace, downtown Austin pizza, offers Neapolitan-style pizzas, including classics like the Margherita and Marinara, as well as a rotating selection of hot and cold antipasti. For dessert, expect Italian favorites like Tiramisu and Budino. The all-Italian wine list features 40 bottles, with may offered by the glass. Peroni Italian beer on draft. Easy and urban, the restaurant seats just 30 diners, half at tables and the rest around the convivial bar. Local designers Michael Hsu and Kasey McCarty restored the historic 130-year-old building to its original luster. The centerpiece of the backspace is a Forni Cirigliano wood-fired pizza oven, custom-made and shipped over from Naples, the only one like it in Austin. We’re on Twitter too…@backspaceaustin

The first time I was here, I wasn’t too impressed. I was with people that wanted the standby classics – sausage and peppers; and a pepperoni pizza. The pizza has a wonderfully light and chewy crust. But the sausage and pepperoni pies were unimpressive.

The second time I came here was a whole different story! I wasn’t in a picky mood, so I let my two friends order for us. We had an unremarkable appetizer, but then two of the best pies ever! The first was the roasted mushrooms sans capers, which was fantastic! The second was the bianca with mushrooms and an over easy egg added. Easily one of the best pizzas I have ever had, and I have ate a ton of pizzas.

Definitely in the top 10 of pizzas in Austin (which is not much of a feat).

This place just keeps bringing it. My first visit was about 3 years ago and I fell in love!

The space is a little small but I love it. It makes me feel like I’m in NYC or Europe. I love the simple decor and cozy ambience. The servers are always cool, the staff are very accommodating with reservations and the food is outstanding. Their Margherita pizza is my favorite – what is in that crushed tomato sauce?!

On my most recent visit the other day, I had a glass of Nebbiolo which was so light and fresh. Their desserts are off the chain – we had the hazelnut and peanut butter. They’re something like pot de creme or pudding? I have no idea but they were fantastic!

One of my favorite restaurants in Austin. I will be back, of course!

Very cool little place. Legitimate wood fired brick oven, excellent preparation, fresh ingredients, courteous staff, and an outstanding pizza.
A light crisp crust baked to perfection. I was impressed.
Lunch seems to be their slow time.
    Highly recommended.
