Gloriously unshackled from the restraints of “logic” and “narrative,” RETRIBUTION is a maximalist barrage of HD live-action PlayStation cutscenes designed to make Milla Jovovich look as cool as possible. Consequently, it winds up one of the best video game movies ever made.
As protagonist Alice moves through simulated unrealities and re-experiences past lives, the franchise itself falls inward through a “greatest hits” remix of kick-ass moments from prior films. You’ll find eye-popping images, performances ranging from campy to unbelievable, and a total, straight-laced commitment to eliciting cheers in the theater. Simultaneously completely absurd and absolutely brilliant, RETRIBUTION plays like SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK for people who think a woman dual-wielding machine guns in high heels and latex is the sickest thing ever. Frankly, it is.
