Moonstruck Valentine’s Feast
DO YOU LOVE HIM, LORETTA?
A celebration of love, passion, family, and life, director Norman Jewison’s MOONSTRUCK is, to put it simply, one of the best romantic comedies of all time. John Patrick Shanley’s tale of perfectly mismatched lovers deservedly won the 1987 Academy Award for best original screenplay, and it’s a splendid piece of writing: uproarious yet touching, poignant yet playful. Cher (who won the best actress Oscar) is fiercely funny as Loretta Castorini, a widowed bookkeeper who has given up on waiting for Mr. Right and agreed to marry kind, bland Johnny (Danny Aiello). However, when Loretta meets Johnny’s wild-hearted brother, Ronny (the volcanic/vulnerable Nicolas Cage), her dull life suddenly spirals out of control and she is transformed from frumpy to ravishing.
The chemistry between Cher and Cage is intoxicating and irresistible, and so are the letter-perfect performances of Vincent Gardenia and Olympia Dukakis (Best Supporting Actress winner) as Loretta’s parents, who are coping with their own challenges. And don’t forget John Mahoney’s wonderful supporting role as an aging professor who gets schooled by a surprising conquest. Like the operas Ronny adores, MOONSTRUCK builds skillfully and steadily to a magnificently orchestrated finale in which all the pieces magically – and hilariously – fall into place. Think you can find a better date movie than this? SNAP OUT OF IT!
