Diverse, elegant, and complex, Tsuruda’s distinctive sound disregards genre and pushes the boundaries of bass music and hip hop.
Born Thomas Jay Tsuruda in 1991, the sonic pioneer was immersed in music as soon as he could read – beginning with piano, then violin, then vocal lessons. No stranger to classical training or the self-discipline that comes with it, Tsuruda attended a music school through 8thgrade. He spent his childhood experimenting with every instrument that he could get his hands on, then discovered the world of producing at age 15 – and a new obsession was born.
Influenced by visionaries like Madlib and Flying Lotus, Tsuruda fuses stylistic innovations with immaculate design to make music that demands attention. His idiosyncratic, surprising live sets have captivated audiences throughout North America and beyond, propelling the producer into the top echelon of bass heavyweights.
Tsuruda’s musical career has been marked by a swift push onto the bleeding edge of underground music. Following a legendary sunrise set at Emissions Music Festival with G Jones and Slow Magic in 2015, Tsuruda stormed across the Midwest to headline festivals like Intrasound. From Canada to California’s Bay Area, he was soon holding down stages with brothers in bass like Penthouse Penthouse, Sweater Beats, Zeke Beats, Mikos Da Gawd, and Woolymammoth.
By 2017, Tsuruda was opening for Bassnectar’s Bass Center arena show. He performed at Oregon Eclipse Festival, a once-in-a-lifetime honor for the musician, followed in 2018 with two sets at Shambala Festival in British Columbia. That summer he played at the last Low End Theory ever as part of legendary club night’s final showcase along with Tyler the Creator, Tokimonsta, and The Glitch Mob. Tsuruda has toured with the biggest beat masters including Mr. Carmack, Shades (EPROM and Alix Perez), and G Jones on the Ineffable Truth Tour in early 2019 – followed by his first-ever set at Las Vegas’ Electric Daisy Carnival in May.
Currently based in Los Angeles, Tsuruda is more focused on making music than ever before, with five self-released LPs plus numerous singles on labels like Team Supreme and Darker Than Wax. His first official LP Move was released in 2016 by Division Recordings, a label curated by drum and bass legend Noisia. Tsuruda followed it in 2018 with the album Unlimited Data on Courteous Family, his LA collective. In addition to a slew of bootlegs over the years, the producer has also released official remixes for Noisia, The Glitch Mob, and Project Paradise (Mr. Carmack and Promnite).
Tsuruda’s newest project FUBAR drops on October 4, 2019, and will be distributed by the influential Los Angeles label Alpha Pup. Create for the club/festival setting, the FUBAR EP showcases the producer’s uniquely high-caliber take on bass music (halftime, dubstep, garage) while still maintaining his LA beat scene style. FUBAR (F*cked Up Beyond All Recognition) features nine hard-hitting tracks, including “Dragon of the Darkness Flame,” “Kimchi Crisis,” and “Little Mac (feat. Mr. Carmack). It’s expected to be the biggest release ever for the groundbreaking producer.
