Welcome to Austin, TX, live music capitol of the world! The Firehouse Hostel is located in the upper floors of the oldest standing Firehouse in downtown Austin, built in 1885. We are just a stones throw away from the main entertainment and nightlife strip, Austin’s infamous 6th Street.

While updating the building to 21st century standards, we’ve worked to maintain the old world charm and structure of the original firehouse. Featuring a kitchen and common area, free breakfast each morning, free wifi, clean and accessible bathrooms, and a variety of room styles (not to mention easy access to our adjacent Firehouse Lounge), our hostel is an ideal stop for any traveler.

Our helpful guest staff is available 24/7 and is overflowing with information on Austin’s nightlife districts, outdoor activities, shopping, public transportation and museums. Stop by the front desk for last-minute travel goods to make your stay more enjoyable. We have toothbrushes, razors, and any of your last-minute needs available for purchase.

Make new friends in our common room and kitchen where you’ll find games, cards, and new friends. And downstairs….. Nestled in the heart of downtown Austin, our craft cocktail lounge and international hostel are located in the city’s oldest standing fire station, built in 1885. Discover speakeasy charm in the Firehouse Lounge, accessible through a hidden bookshelf in the hostel lobby.

The atmosphere is warm and inviting, further heightened by our selection of craft cocktails, prohibition-era drinks, and timeless attention to detail. Featuring an eclectic mix some of Austin’s best-kept musical secrets, the Firehouse Lounge offers something for everyone, travelers and locals alike.

  1. Check out this speakeasy. Enter through the hostel and then pull the bookcase open and enter into the lounge. Beer and mixed drinks.

  2. Went here on a Wednesday evening for a coworker’s birthday who was in town. Great cocktails (she got very intoxicated) and, surprising to us, great food. A definite hole in the wall but awesome atmosphere and stupendous bartenders who are super nice. Will put it on my list of places to go again the next time I need something special for a downtown evening.

Also, based on the photos I’m seeing and their website, they regularly change up the menu. Lookout for the flatbread and, FYI, the sliders are awesome.

  3. fun to walk through the bookcase — it’s like a different world. Outside is like a hotel / regular building and once you open that door, you hear loud music and people talking at the bar pretty cool.

only problem is it’s really small, so there’s no place to sit, and it was kind of hot in there. Humid. they need better air circulation in the small crowded space. (this was on a saturday night at around 10pm)

good drinks, good atmosphere, i recommend this place to check out!

  4. Went here on a Saturday night. It was busy and crowded, but not in a way that felt overwhelming or claustrophobic. The bartenders are nice and put on a good show. I felt really cool coming into a bar through a bookcase! They had a good selection of liquors that are above my pricepoint, but seemed neat, plus your usual local beer selection in cans/bottles and drafts.

I would definitely be back, and it’s a cool spot to bring out of town guests for the sheer speakeasy allure.

  5. This place is just cool.
The entrance is through a bookshelf in the lobby of the hostel upstairs (which I would also recommend staying in). This place has a strong speakeasy vibe and it’s just fun inside. Drinks are price well over the average for this area, but you are paying for the ambiance. A must see for anyone downtown.

  6. Really cool bar located in the heart of downtown. I really enjoyed their nice ambiance and great drinks.

Enter by sliding a bookshelf. It’s crazy but fun, like going into a secret hiding spot.

I ordered some kind of gin drinks. I just explained to a bartender what I wanted and he mixed something up for me. Something citrusy with gin tasted so good.

Loved everything about this bar, hope to come back again at my next visit to Austin.

  7. Hipsterish, yes.
    Secret bookshelf entrance, yes.
    Fantastic cocktails, yes.

So We went here for a friends wedding reception, and it was mid afternoon on a Saturday. It was hot and muggy out, and we arrived a few minutes late. The guy at the hotel desk had a funny grin as I tried to figure out how to get in here, but that just made it seem even better.
it has that dark basement feel, but is surprisingly well lit. The bar counter top is very high, so watch out when you get off the stool, depending on how much you have enjoyed your drinks.
I appreciated the velvet pictures on the wall, it felt very “Austin” that one of them was of Willy.

Now this is a strange one, but I have to say, some of the funniest bathroom graffiti in the mens room. I would think its gone by now, but if its not, someone has a flair for the artistic side and turned the knots in the wood into pooping wildlife.

  8. In an area that is surround by nothing but touristy dirty bars Firehouse is a breath of fresh air. Firehouse is a cool joint to stop in and grab a few quick drinks. Its kind of fun walking through the bookshelf. If was traveling I’d totally want to stay at the hostel and as a bar customer meeting the guests and getting to know new people is always fun.

They do great classic cocktails, I didn’t find many of the drinks that inventive but they had all the typical classic stuff with new names. Service is a bit slow as they always seem to have one bartender trying to make classic cocktails for the entire bar. The drinks come out perfect so its hard to complain too much.

Firehouse is great everyone should check it out.
