“Hip” casual and affordable, The Backspace Downtown Austin Restaurant offers Neapolitan-style pizzas, including classics like the Margherita and Marinara, as well as a rotating selection of hot and cold antipasti. For dessert, expect Italian favorites like Tiramisu and Budino. The all-Italian wine list features 40 bottles, with may offered by the glass. Peroni Italian beer on draft. Easy and urban, the restaurant seats just 30 diners, half at tables and the rest around the convivial bar. Local designers Michael Hsu and Kasey McCarty restored the historic 130-year-old building to its original luster. The centerpiece of the backspace is a Forni Cirigliano wood-fired pizza oven, custom-made and shipped over from Naples, the only one like it in Austin. Check out our menu.

  1. I had dinner here on a sunday night while in town visiting austin. It is quite small, so if going on a more popular night I suggest a reservation. We started with the meat board. It was qutie large and delicious. We ordered a bunch of the pizzas and split them. They were good and a decent personal size. Wine list was also nice. Service was good. I would go back again.

  2. Really cute, romantic spot. The margarita pizza was great, everything tested really fresh. Wait staff was helpful and polite. I can’t think of a single complaint! Perfect date spot & right off of 6th street.

  3. This place is so cute and the pizza and seasonal salad were tasty too!
Came on a Friday night around 6:30, we were seated at the bar within minutes. Table seating was mostly by reservation, so something to keep in mind if you’re with a group. They had an awesome selection of wines but only 1 beer and no liquor on the menu.

Pizza was great, happy hour looked like it offered some killer deals.

  5. I hate pizza. I LOVE The Backspace. This place has my taste buds all confused! I succumbed to the office crew lunch order and visited The Backspace for lunch on a weekday. Three of us ladies comfortably split two pizzas, the sausage and the arugula pizza, and both were AMAZING! They do a nice thin crust pizza, the ingredients are clearly the highest quality, and they were pretty quick to make it on the spot and have us on our way back to the office. The location is no frills and quaint, but comfortable. We were taking out so were able to sit at the bar and watch them make our pizzas while we waited. One thing I didn’t realize was that you need to order to prosciutto on the side. We thought it came with the pizza as we saw another table with it. Would love to come back to do that order right the next time!

  6. A pleasant little pizza stop perfect for meeting a friend and grabbing a drink or two or ten maybe if you’re into that kind of thing! Ha.

I met a friend here for a networking, spacing can be tight so I’d be cautious if coming here during peak hours such as lunch or dinner. They offer a variety of pizzas, from the basic pepperoni to more interesting such as lamb and pork.

My entree was tasty, enough where I’d return again to try another dish. Staff was also very accommodating and helpful since it was my first time there.

  7. Tiny place with a few tables, you can make reservations through OpenTable. We showed up at 5:45 and were one of the three groups there. The menu seems small (in size) but has a large selection! The lamb and pork meatballs come sizzling hot in a cast iron serving dish. We had the fennel sausage pizza which was strong of fennel but not overpowering. The crust is perfect. Blackened bits on the crusts and a nice strong, thin crust under the red sauce. The appetizer and pizza was enough for my date and I to split. We will be back!
